Empower Energy Evolution
Uniper has the expertise and experience to play an expanding role in helping the UK reach its target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Flexible gas assets are essential to support a secure system with an increased take up of renewables, and we’ll need the same reliability in the net-zero future. And Uniper has pledged to make its European power generation portfolio climate-neutral by 2035, with clean hydrogen technology as a cornerstone of its new strategy.
We understand that climate protection must go hand in hand with supply security and are introducing innovative solutions such as inertia services to the Grid, at our Grain and Killingholme sites.
In the UK, Uniper operates a flexible generation portfolio of seven power stations, a fast-cycle gas storage facility, an Engineering Academy and a broad range of commercial activities are offered through our Engineering Services division.
Mike Lockett
Mike Lockett holds the dual role of Chief Commercial Officer Power for the Uniper Group and Uniper UK Country Chairman.
Mike has worked in various engineering and commercial roles since joining the UK electricity industry in 1997. A chartered electrical engineer, he spent the first years of his career with Midlands Electricity in its networks business. In 2008 Mike moved to Düsseldorf to set up E.ON’s commodity trading business, where he subsequently held a range of leadership roles.
In 2015, he became a Board Member of the newly-established Uniper UK Ltd company. He was appointed Uniper UK Country Chairman in January 2019.
Since 2017, Mike has been Chief Commercial Officer for Uniper’s power business. In this role, he is responsible for power and fuels commodity trading and optimisation, and dispatch of Uniper’s generation portfolio.
Mike is a member of the Supervisory Board of the European Energy Exchange (Leipzig), and the Management Board of Powernext (Paris).
A broad portfolio of assets for a secure energy supply
Our generation fleet makes a tangible contribution to Britain’s supply security. We own and operate power stations at Connah's Quay, Cottam Development Centre, Enfield, Grain, Killingholme, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, and Taylor's Lane. Find more information about our plant portfolio here.
We want to make sure our power plants, like the one at Enfield, can operate more efficiently and flexibly, helping to deliver power when and where it’s needed - cost-effectively complementing renewables. Hear more about our investment plans at Enfield here.
Through our trading activities we make our power production available to the market and provide balancing services to the UK system operator. We also buy and sell natural gas, which is brought to the United Kingdom via pipelines or LNG terminals. We own a stake in BBL, a 235-kilometer gas pipeline between Balgzand in the Netherlands and Bacton in the UK. We also own significant long-term regasification capacity at the Grain LNG terminal in Kent.
In addition, we own and operate a gas storage facility in Holford in Cheshire and two high-pressure gas pipelines, from Theddlethorpe to Killingholme and from Blyborough to Cottam, in Northeast England.
The Uniper Engineering Academy offers purpose-built facilities delivering public open courses and bespoke training programmes - from Gas Turbine Operations and Maintenance to Electric Vehicle Charging - to match energy business needs anywhere in the world. The Academy typically deliver around 600 courses to 4000 delegates per year and also won accreditation as an approved provider under the UK Government’s new apprenticeship levy programme.
